About The Artist

My photo
Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Hello! I am a fine arts painter, with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My primary painting medium is oil and alkyd, and mostly I work in a representational style. My greatest challenge as a painter is to capture the effect of light; and my greatest joy as a painter is to accomplish that. Many thanks to those readers who have been following this blog since Day 1 (May 19, 2008). To those who are visiting for the first time today...Welcome, and thanks for dropping by!

Sneak Preview #4...And help from an Art Friend

"Rose Petal Kimono", 2019. Mixed media, rose petals on panel, 20x16. (Photo credit: Margot Geist)

Saturday afternoon I finished up all the framing and wiring and delivered 24 pieces of art to the Weyrich Gallery for my exhibit "In a Japanese Garden, Revisited.". Ahhhhhh....now I can relax a bit until this Friday evening's opening from 5-8:30pm.

Although most colors in the pink family are not ones I use very often, I love the color of the background on this painting. It's called Persian Rose, a Williamsburg Handmade Oil pigment made by Golden Paints.

But when I was deciding which hue to choose, I thought of my friend Annabelle Meacham, an artist who lives and works in Memphis, TN. Annabelle is a bold colorist, and it came to my mind, "What color would Annabelle choose?" I grabbed the Persian Rose and painted it in. Perfect!

Thank you, Annabelle, for being an inspiration for this painting!

(You can see more of Annabelle's work at LRoss Gallery.)

Sneak Preview #3

"Kimono (with Bell and Horse)", 2019, mixed media & collage, 12x12
Last summer I experimented with acrylic pour paintings, starting with a 2-hour workshop at our local Artisan's Art Supply store. It was a lot of fun and I did several more pour paintings in my studio—one which became the kimono image posted today.

This piece will be included in my upcoming "In a Japanese Garden, Revisited" exhibit, opening next Friday, May 3, at Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque. If you're in town, please come by to see the show.

Sneak Preview #2...and Happy Spring!

"Spring Kimono", 2019, mm on rice paper mounted on panel, 12x12"
Such a lovely day in New Mexico it has been: sunny, warm, with lilacs blooming, irises ready to burst forth, and little rose buds forming.

In honor of the day and the season I'm posting "Spring Kimono", another painting to be including in my May exhibit, "In a Japanese Garden, Revisited" opening Friday, May 3, at the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque.

Happy Spring to all!

Sneak Preview ....Revisiting a Japanese Garden

Original: White Blossoms & Clematis, 2019, mixed media on panel, 12x12"  (Photo Credit: Margot Geist)

In just a a couple of weeks, my new exhibit "In a Japanese Garden, Revisited" will open at the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque.

Today's image—White Blossoms & Clematis—is the piece I selected for the postcard invitation announcing the opening on Friday, May 3, 5-8:30pm.

Once again, this body of work presents a variety of of kimonos and flowers inspired by Japanese forms and sensibility.

In many of the paintings the kimono shape mergers with its surroundings of flowers and foliage to express the ideals of beauty and harmony of "Man in Nature". In other pieces, design and traditions from other cultures are melded as a purely abstraction fusion of decorative imagery.

Of course, the ultimate goal is Beauty.
