About The Artist

My photo
Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Hello! I am a fine arts painter, with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My primary painting medium is oil and alkyd, and mostly I work in a representational style. My greatest challenge as a painter is to capture the effect of light; and my greatest joy as a painter is to accomplish that. Many thanks to those readers who have been following this blog since Day 1 (May 19, 2008). To those who are visiting for the first time today...Welcome, and thanks for dropping by!

Last Week to see "Biologique"!

Royal Garden, mixed media, 18" x 14" framed, $595.
I was very pleased to have all three of my entries accepted into this exhibit at the New Mexico Art League, located at 3409 Juan Tabo NE (just behind the Albuquerque Public Library on the west side of the street).

I was out of town for the opening, so I went to see the show last week. The theme of "Biologique" is Nature and natural forms, and there was quite a variety of interpretations in the exhibit, done in every medium imaginable, all very high quality.

Shown above is one of my art works in "Biologique." This piece is from my "In a Japanese Garden" series, and is named Royal Garden for the purple color, which was a hue only worn by royalty or those of high rank in Japanese traditional culture.

The show ends this Saturday, February 25. The NM Art League is open Tuesday thru Saturday, 10am-4pm.

In a Japanese Garden...Last Views

Royal Garden, 2016. Mixed media, 16" x 12"

Today and tomorrow are the last days of my exhibit, "In the Japanese Garden" at the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque. And what better painting to share with you than this "Royal Garden", especially if you are a fan of the color purple.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing some of the paintings on this blog that were part of the exhibit. Thanks for being a part of this experience and process.

Last Week of My Exhibit

Kimono III (Gold), 2016, mixed media on panel, "12x12"
Since this is the last week of my exhibit "In a Japanese Garden" at the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque, I am posting the remaining paintings in the show.

One of the interesting facts I discovered while doing research for this exhibit was that the color purple was very difficult color to obtain in Japan during the Nara period, and therefore, very pricey. Only royalty, high ranking officials and priests were allowed to even wear the color purple.

Even though I had finished this painting, after learning that fact, I added purple dotting to this piece--adding a touch of "royalty" to it.

Fall Colors...even purple!

Autumn Leaf #3 (Purple), 2014. Mixed media mounted on panel, 4"x6"
Available for purchase at Daily Paintworks.

About a week after my "Dried Leaf" post in September, a package from my sister arrived in the mail.

What a delightful surprise! Inside were 27 autumn leaves, in a variety of colors and sizes, beautifully pressed, with each leaf packaged in its own handmade waxed paper envelope. My sister lives out East and expresses her creativity by making exquisite handmade cards and books for friends and family. She had collected these leaves almost two years ago while on hike in the Appalachian Mountains, pressed them, used some for a project, and stored the rest away. While cleaning out a closet, she came across them and was surprised that the color was still so bright. She mailed them off to New Mexico.

I was thrilled to receive them! Even though I love the autumn in New Mexico, there are not a lot of hardwood trees here with leaves that turn bright red or orange–or purple, like the one I painted and posted for today.

Thank you, April! And thank you, Dear Readers, for taking a moment to visit my blog.

By the Window...

By the Window, 2014
Original painting, oil on panel, 6x6"
SOLD
For me, painting is always about the light--
in this painting, coming through the window,
illuminating the forms of a lovely iris, closeup.

Thank you for taking a look.
