About The Artist

My photo
Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Hello! I am a fine arts painter, with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My primary painting medium is oil and alkyd, and mostly I work in a representational style. My greatest challenge as a painter is to capture the effect of light; and my greatest joy as a painter is to accomplish that. Many thanks to those readers who have been following this blog since Day 1 (May 19, 2008). To those who are visiting for the first time today...Welcome, and thanks for dropping by!

TOO MUCH ART Sale: Last Day!

SOLD "Blue" (Morning Glories), metal print reproduction, 7" x 5"

My internet is being disconnect this weekend until after I have moved, so today is the last day of my online TOO MUCH ART Sale.

Today’s offering is a reproduction of a small painting that sold a few years ago. I then digitized it and “painted” on it some more in Photoshop. The image is printed on a thin aluminum sheet which will fit into a standard 5”x7” frame. It is hand signed on the back.

I have 3 of these, ready to mail to flower lovers out there. The cost of each one is $20 plus $5 shipping. (One to customer, please.)

As a reminder, all the artwork offered during the TOO MUCH ART Sale is posted here on this blog.

Have a good day!

White Blossoms, Version 2

"White Blossoms, Blue Sky," 2016. Original mixed media on panel, 6"x6". Available: Contact Artist.

Back in September I posted a different "White Blossoms" painting, one with a bright yellow background.

Today's image is a different version of "White Blossoms" with a background of blue. It's painted with gouache on rice paper, overlaid with color pencil and accented with metallic gold. Rather cheerful, I think, considering the wintry weather some folks are experiencing today.

Thank you for taking a moment to visit my blog. Enjoy your weekend.

Final "Glorious" Version

Morning Glorious, 2009
by Carol Adamec
Original painting in oil, alkyd on gessoed panel
5" x 8"
SOLD

I posted this painting a few weeks ago as Almost Done. Now it is done ... and re-done!

If you compare today's image with the version on April 23, you can see that I reworked the color of the leaves, lighting and "greening" them up. I also added hints of more foliage in the background. The stamen details in the blue morning glory on the right are now defined, too.

Overall, I think this final version has more illumination, space, and air in it. And, even though the painting is only 5" x 8" it seems to have a larger "presence." I'm thinking I may translate this image into a larger size. Any suggestions or observations from my Readers are welcome. Please leave a comment. Thanks!

My sincere Thank You to those who posted/sent me comments about the lily painting. I appreciate your thoughts. Often your observations help me to better see what I've painted...really!

Enjoy your weekend .... and call your Mother on Sunday!

See you Monday.

Morning Glorious Progress Report

Morning Glorious (WIP)
by Carol Adamec
Original: Oil, alkyd on gessoed panel
6" x 8"

Well, I didn't go to Santa Fe this weekend. Fortunately, the show at the O'Keeffe Museum runs into May; so I intend to see the exhibit in a couple of weeks.

However, I did work in the studio on my new flower painting, Morning Glorious. It's still "rough." Although I want the blue of the morning glory to "sing" right now it's screeching! The bloom also feels very dense, rather than fragile and translucent. Obviously, I have my work cut out for me.

Many thanks to those of you who commented on Morning Daffodils, too. I sincerely appreciate that you took the time to give me your opinion and response.

Thanks for taking a look today. See you Thursday.

Adding Color...

"Blue Gate" (in progress)
Original painting,
Oil & alkyd on canvas panel
10 x 8"

Following an afternoon of painting, my first new piece of 2009 is starting to take shape, now with its basic colors in place. I'm pretty happy with the overall feeling of light and shadow, too. There are still some color refinements, paint layering, and details to work on; so, you'll see the final version next week.

Also, the painting's title is "Blue Gate." (I have no idea why I typed "Blue Door" in the last post....That's another painting, if it comes to fruition.)

Thanks for taking a moment to look at today's post. Have a great weekend. See you Monday.

A Little Night Music

A Little Night Music, 2003
Oil, alkyd on gessoed panel
Original available: 24"x24"
Also available as LE Giclée on canvas or open edition Art Print. Contact Artist for purchase info.
———————————————————.

I first fell under the spell of Georgia O'Keeffe's imagery when I was a student at The Art Institute of Chicago. The Museum owned "Black Cross of New Mexico," one of my favorite paintings in the collection.

As mentioned in my post on May 23, I discovered the datura—a beautiful white flute which unfurls into a magnificent blossom at night—while living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is the same flower that O'Keeffe depicted in some of her paintings.

"A Little Night Music" was the second datura painting I did, just awhile after completing "Moonlight and Datura." Being a former student of piano and a fan of Mozart, I added the musical notation of "A Little Night Music" arranged as stars in the night sky.

The original painting is available for purchase, as is the signed and numbered Art Print sold through ETSY: http://www.caroladamec.etsy.com). "A Little Night Music" is also available in limited edition as a giclée on stretched canvas or on paper. Contact me for additional information about any of these items.

Have a great weekend. See you Monday!

Different Strokes....

Moon Crazy (Luna Loca)
Oil, alkyd on canvas over panel.
Original available: 30" x 36"
Contact Artist to purchase.

The painting featured today began as an abstract image, a rare venture for me to attempt. I prepared the canvas by stretching it over a masonite, gessoing the canvas, and then applying a spray-on texture to give the canvas a rough surface; and then began painting the abstract image. After several weeks of work, the painting was finished. I even framed it.

After several more weeks, I was "over it" and decided to recycle the canvas, intending to use it at a later time. As I was randomly repainting the canvas, the image of a wild horse—legs splayed out, tossing its head—just "appeared." I was so surprised by this apparition, but decided to "go with the flow." After refining some details and adding the full moon, it was done. I named it Moon Crazy or "Luna Loca." The entire transformation, from abstract painting to expressionistic image, took about 5 days!

This painting always evokes a definitive response—folks either love it or hate it. My son and daughter-in-law selected a large giclée of Moon Crazy for Christmas two years ago, while a friend of mine, who was coming to my house one evening, asked me to hang the painting in another room, out of her sight!

That's the great thing about art: There are different strokes for different folks!

The original painting, completed in 2000, is available for purchase. Moon Crazy is also available as a limited edition giclée on stretched in several sizes, and as an open edition Art Print via my ETSY store: www.CarolAdamec.etsy.com. For more information or questions you may have, please email me.

Thanks for looking and enjoy your day. See you Friday!

Art Making in the Digital Age

Kathryn's Chair, 2006.

_____________________________________________

It's fascinating to me to see how artists work — which resources, methods, and tools they employ to create their paintings.

As a realist painter, I rely on quick "idea" sketches, photographs, digital images, pictures in art books, and "Googled" resources for visualizing objects and pulling together ideas for paintings.

My digital camera is my new sketchbook for creating preparatory "drawings," since I can shoot several photographs and then edit, enhance, and manipulate the pictures in PhotoShop until I get the composition I want. Other times, I'll print out several copies of a photo to cut and paste the various elements by hand to create a composite collage of the painting to-be.

If the painting will be small, I make an inkjet print to work from. If the painting will be large, I use Kinko's services to have an enlarged black and white printout made to transfer the image to canvas. In the studio, I can display the photo on my laptop computer to check on colors and to zoom in for details.

However, as the painting nears completion, I end up using the tried-and-true "traditional" tools of art — memory, imagination, intuition, and the experience of painting.

"Kathryn's Chair" was painted in 2006 using the tools and methods described above. Measuring 22" x 20" the painting is rendered in oil and alkyd on stretched canvas.

Thanks for looking. Your questions and comments are welcome.

See you Friday!
