About The Artist

My photo
Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Hello! I am a fine arts painter, with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My primary painting medium is oil and alkyd, and mostly I work in a representational style. My greatest challenge as a painter is to capture the effect of light; and my greatest joy as a painter is to accomplish that. Many thanks to those readers who have been following this blog since Day 1 (May 19, 2008). To those who are visiting for the first time today...Welcome, and thanks for dropping by!

TOO MUCH ART: Day 3

Today’s sale paintings reflect my living in New Mexico, home to 23 different Native American tribes. And the color for the day is RED!

“Pueblo Pictoral”, oil on gessoed panel, 12” x 8”, unframed.  Price $45.

Off and on over the past several years, I’ve developed various traditional pottery sherd designs into paintings. Folks often think of Native American designs being primarily geometric. However, there are many motifs based on natural forms, such as deer, bears, birds, plants, and leaves. This imagery is found on pottery, weavings, jewelry, and other items created by Native American artisans and referred to as “pictorals.”

SOLD “Indian Things”, oil on stretched canvas, 10” x 8”, framed. Price $100

A friend of mine has a Southwest style home decorated with Native American items which she and her parents collected over the years. While house sitting for her several years ago, I enjoyed looking at the various objects on display and was inspired to create this still life painting composed of some of her treasures.

Finished: "Kimono for Modern Girl"

Kimono modern girl painting adamec
"Kimono for Modern Girl", 2020, oil, collage on stretched canvas, 36" x 36"

While the Jazz Age was flourishing in America during the 1920’s, the “moga” (short for modan gaaru) or “modern girl” emerged in the urban areas of Japan.

Inspired by the American Flapper, the modern girl cast off her traditional kimono and morĂ©s, adopting Western-style fashions, makeup, and hairstyles, while indulging in a social nightlife of dancing, smoking, drinking sake, and riding in cars with “mobos” (modern boys), much to horror of her traditional Japanese parents.

In this painting, I've relaxed the rigidity of the traditional kimono, and "fleshed" it out with a sense of the female form. The Japanese writing in the upper left hand corner is the title of a popular novel of the day,  "Naomi (A Fool's Love)", about a man's obsession to marry a "modern girl"and encourage her Westernized ways.

In the meantime....

Original: "Red Kimono" 2020, Acrylic gouache, gold, 16"x12"

I'm still working on my large painting, "Kimono for Modern Girl." In the meantime, I finished up this smaller painting, "Red Kimono." It's similar to "White Lily Kimono" I did a few years ago.

If you'd like to leave a comment, please do so. I am always pleased to hear what viewers think of my work.

Have a great day!

Done! "Summer Hollyhocks"

Original painting: "Summer Hollyhocks (Red)" 2019. Oil on gessoed panel, 12x12"
Once the red areas were roughed in and dry, it took another day to get the background color right and a few days for those areas to dry. Monday in the studio was spent refining the edges and tweaking the details. And now it's finished.

Thanks for following the progress on this painting. If you would like to leave a comment, please do. I always appreciate hearing what viewers see in my work—sometimes things I don't even notice myself!

Garden Square–RED

Garden Square—Red, 2015.
Mixed media on mulberry paper mounted on panel, 6x6"
SOLD

As I mentioned in my last blog post, I have been revisiting the Boogie Board drawings I created over the last two years and reformatting and revising some of the images from "Garden Varieties Series."

Today's image—GARDEN SQUARE RED—is rendered in luscious warm colors as an exuberant 6"x6" design based on abundant foliage and blooming flowers and buds. I like some of the textural effects, too that came about, using inks and Prismacolor pencils on mulberry paper.

Thank you for taking a moment to read this blog, and please feel free to leave comment if you wish. I appreciate your feedback!

Hello, I'm Back!

Floating Rose, 2014
Original oil painting on panel, 6" x 4"
SOLD
Hello, Dear Readers,

No, I haven't forsaken you or my blog. I have been out of town for most of the summer and just recently returned. And here it is, the end of July already!

Before my travels, I had been painting the late spring and early summer flowers and thought I would have time to post them online. That (obviously) didn't happen.

So, I am now ready to share these colorful little beauties with you over the next week or two. I hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for giving a few moments of your time to take a look. I hope you are enjoying your summer, too!

Hearts & Flowers, Folk Style

Hearts & Flowers: Folk Style, 2013. Hand colored, mixed media on rice paper.
The fun part of hand coloring my Boogie Board prints is altering the hues and patterns to see how it all turns out. The variety of possibilities is amazing. The saturated colors of this version reminded me of the bright and cheerful designs of American Folk Art styles, such as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Enjoy!

Thanks for visiting my blog and have a great day.

Red or Green?

In New Mexico, "Red or green?" is a common inquiry heard at most restaurants, when the waitperson is asking you which chile you prefer with your meal. (Hint: Get both—red AND green—on the side.)

With only a few days left before Mother's Day, I'm giving my readers a choice of "Garden Varieties 8" in two New Mexico color versions: "Garden Varieties RED" or "Garden Varieties GREEN (with yummy turquoise in the background)".

These two new versions are hot off the printer, matted 8"x10" in black.

Painting the Tulip Red

Red (Tulip), 2010
Original, oil, alkyd on panel 6" x 8"
SOLD
After painting so many greens, it was fun to paint all these reds. Actually, after letting the painting dry, I glazed the reds.

Glazing involves brushing on a transparent mixture made with a tiny bit of pigment—in this case, a cadmium red—diluted with a lot of medium, which I painted over the red of the tulip. The result is a "deepening" of the color that really sings. As you can see, the tulip color appears highly saturated and seems to glow.

BTW: My friend Sondra, who took the original photograph of the "Pea Pods" I painted for the last week's post, dropped me an email: "These are mimosa or aka silk tree seeds. Gardeners and horticulturists could be offended!" I am red faced, since I used to have a mimosa tree and should have recognized the difference! Once again I have confirmed that I am no gardener, although I am very happy to have friends who are! I'll be changing the name of that little painting, right now.

Thanks for taking a look, and enjoy your weekend. I'll see you next week.

Red

Red
Original painting
Oil, alkyd on panel
5" x 7"
SOLD

I don't know if it's the heat in Albuquerque or because I've been mixing up a lot of red colors to finish another painting, but this image of an Orientale poppy was nagging me to be painted. So here it is!

I took some photos of these blossoms a few weeks ago when the poppies were in full bloom; and I'm glad I did, since the flowers don't last all that long.

Happy Fourth of July! See you next week.

Another piece from the past

Dragonheart, 2002
Original mixed media
15" x 15"
SOLD

Although I worked in the studio this weekend, everything is too wet to put on the scanner. So, once again I'm posting an artwork I did a several years ago.

In November 2000,
I went to China for a 10 day tour. It was quite wonderful and mindboggling, too. For the next couple of years, I did several paintings, prints, and mixed media artworks that incorporated imagery and references to Chinese culture.

This piece is composed with a lot of red, black yellow, and gold coloring, sort of a Chinese palette. The text on the left comes from a booklet of ancient Chinese writings. The dragon in the upper right hand corner is a hand done cut-out made from tissue paper...incredible! I bought a packet of these at the Shanghai Museum for about a dollar. The heart and the rose (another image theme that I favored at the time) and the rest of the piece were painted by me.

Thanks for taking a moment to read this post. And Happy St. Patrick's Day to all! See you Thursday.
