Hello, Dear Readers,

No, I haven't forsaken you or my blog. I have been out of town for most of the summer and just recently returned. And here it is, the end of July already!

Before my travels, I had been painting the late spring and early summer flowers and thought I would have time to post them online. That (obviously) didn't happen.

So, I am now ready to share these colorful little beauties with you over the next week or two. I hope you enjoy them.

Happy New Year!

For this first day of 2013 I am posting a rose drawing done on my new "Jot" eWriter, a Boogie Board device that I'll write about in a future post.

Although I worked in the studio this weekend, everything is too wet to put on the scanner. So, once again I'm posting an artwork I did a several years ago.

In November 2000, I went to China for a 10 day tour. It was quite wonderful and mindboggling, too. For the next couple of years, I did several paintings, prints, and mixed media artworks that incorporated imagery and references to Chinese culture.

This piece is composed with a lot of red, black yellow, and gold coloring, sort of a Chinese palette. The text on the left comes from a booklet of ancient Chinese writings. The dragon in the upper right hand corner is a hand done cut-out made from tissue paper...incredible! I bought a packet of these at the Shanghai Museum for about a dollar. The heart and the rose (another image theme that I favored at the time) and the rest of the piece were painted by me.

Painting from Memory

This painting began as a little set up that I was painting from direct observation. I had most of it completed, except the rose. I had the colors right, but not the overlapping of the petals.

The next morning when I arrived at the studio, the poor little rose was limp and the petals shriveled. So much for working from observation!

Having looked at the rose for several hours the day before, I recalled how the rose petals looked and was able to complete the painting. Thank goodness for memory!

One could argue that an artist is always working from memory, whether painting from a photograph, a sketch, or even "live." The image still exists in the mind—not just in the eye—of the artist.

Monday's Rose

Here is the "final" version of the rose, which you have seen in progress over the past couple of weeks.

I reworked the background several times, overlaying colors to vary the lights and darks, and warm and cool colors. One can play around with innumerable possibilities! This is called "nuancing" in "art talk" and can result in very rich color.

Rose Revisited

As you can see from today's image, I spent a good bit of time working on the rose painting; and it's closer to being finished.

I do believe the drawing is better and the rendering is tighter (read: "more realistic"). The foreground (the table that the rose is sitting on) is too pink for me, and the background too mahogany red and dark. What do you think?

It was a short day in the studio Thursday, since I did a little "Father's Day" shopping for my son and brother-in-law. I worked on the "Black Purse" painting today only for about an hour, so you'll see that painting next week.

Back to Basics, Part 2

I did work on the "Black Purse" painting on Monday. However, Tuesday it was still too wet to work on or complete in time for today's blog. So, you'll probably see it Friday.

In the meantime, I turned my attention to one of the 12 unfinished paintings in my studio.

Over the weekend, I started this little still life shown here, and was not happy with the drawing. (Usually when I am unhappy with a painting, it's the drawing that needs attention. But it takes me awhile to realize that.) I worked at least an hour on the "shoulders" of the vase and just could not get it right...duh, back to basic drawing! Then the painting was just too wet to mess with, so I set it aside.

As for the painting, I again began with a grisaille rendering. Although most of the canvas is covered with color, you can still see the rose petals done in light shades of umber. Eventually, the rose will be a deep pink. You can also see from this example that I do start out my paintings with all over, loose brushwork.
