About The Artist

My photo
Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Hello! I am a fine arts painter, with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My primary painting medium is oil and alkyd, and mostly I work in a representational style. My greatest challenge as a painter is to capture the effect of light; and my greatest joy as a painter is to accomplish that. Many thanks to those readers who have been following this blog since Day 1 (May 19, 2008). To those who are visiting for the first time today...Welcome, and thanks for dropping by!

Route 66 Show: Sneak Peek #2

Tucumcari Tepee, 2017, archival digital print by Sondra Diepen, 40"x27"
Sondra Diepen is one of the artists in the exhibit, "Then and Now: Rediscovering Route 66." opening next Thursday (April 27) at the KiMo Theatre Art Gallery in Albuquerque.

With two Nikon cameras and a fist full of sketchy maps, photographer Sondra Diepen, heads out on I-40, exiting here and there, to rediscover the original Mother Road as it once wound through the desolate parts of New Mexico. Her color photographs capture it all—from fading curio shops, boarded up motor courts, rusted classic cars, to motel signs along Central Avenue that still beckon travelers to stop, rest, and see the sights.

Todays' sneak peak is a photograph by Sondra of a curio shop still in operation in Tucumcari, New Mexico, located 42 miles west of the Texas border. Here's what Sondra has to say about her photo:

"TePee Curios was built in 1944, owned by Leland Haynes. It began as a Gulf Station as well as a grocery and curio shop. In 1959 Route 66 was widened through town and the gas pumps had to be removed. The concrete tepee was added to the front, becoming the new entrance to the shop.

"The TePee Curios sign was put in place during the 1960’s. In 2003 the New Mexico Route 66 Neon Sign Restoration Project chose this sign, along with eight other vintage signs, to be restored and lit to recreate the lore of the Mother Road."

"Curios and souvenirs are still sold here. It’s a ‘must stop’ place for today’s Route 66 explorers, where they can buy remembrances of The Road’s past glory.

Route 66 Show: Sneak Peek #1

"Cool Daddy (Elvis Ate Here)", 2017, mixed media, 16x20"
by Carol L. Adamec
Contact Artist to purchase.
Back in the 1960's, the Porter House Cafe was a 24-hour diner in the Route 66 town of Weatherford, Oklahoma, where Elvis Presley and his retinue would stop to eat on their Memphis-to-Las Vegas trip.

The Porter House Cafe was a Valentine Diner—a manufactured portable steel sandwich shop with 8-12 stools and a limited menu, popular from 1930-1970.

Now a museum, the Porter House Cafe displays a spiral notebook “guest book”, where Elvis signed his name on April 22, 1960, and left the comment “Cool Daddy.”

Busy Time for Exhibits (Part 2)

Rising Moon Kimono, mixed media on rice paper, 12x16”
Original painting by Carol L. Adamec
on exhibit in "Merge IV", at Expo NM, Albuquerque
thru April 30, 2017
Last Friday was the opening reception of "Merge IV", the annual members exhibit organized by The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media. (I know, that’s a mouthful, so we members call refer to it as SLMM (“Slim”).

SLMM is an international art organization started by Mary Carroll Nelson, an artist, teacher, and author of several books about art, artists, and spirituality. I “met” Mary Carroll Nelson through her 1994 publication, Artists of the Spirit; and after moving to New Mexico I was honored to be in a 3-person exhibit, “Affirming Wholeness”, with her at the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque in 2000. Mary invited me to become a member of SLMM and I did so in 2001. (You can learn more about this organization at www.slmm.org)

The current "Merge IV" exhibit celebrates the 35th year of SLMM and features 122 artworks by 60 artists from all over the US. So I was pleased to have two paintings accepted into this show, including the new kimono painting I just finished a few months ago, featured on today's post.

The exhibit—free and open to the public—is on display at the African American Performing Arts Center (AAPAC) at Expo NM (The Fairgrounds) thru April 30. AAPAC is open Tuesday thru Friday 10-5pm, and Saturday 10-4pm. I hope you drop by to see the show!

Busy Time for Exhibits

Bugs and Roses, Oil on panel, 12x16”
Original painting by Carol L. Adamec
SOLD
A lot has been going on since I posted a month ago. The Harwood Open Studio Night / Encompass event on March 4 was a lot of fun, as usual, with many friends stopping by my studio and new lookers passing through.

I sold some paintings that evening, including Bugs & Roses, featured on today’s post. The new owners wrote me a sweet note saying, “We love it, love it, love it! Bugs makes me smile every time I walk into Fred’s office.”

Now that’s what I consider a “successful” painting!

Cinnabar, mixed media on rice paper, 14x11."
SOLD
This is the third artwork of mine included in the current exhibit, "Biologique", which I am pleased to report sold during the exhibit.

I have create several versions of this image, with different colorings and materials. For me the design has an Asian feel to it, and with this coloration reminded me of Chinese cinnabar--hence the title.

The "Biologique" exhibit runs thru this Saturday at the New Mexico Art League, 3409 Juan Tabo NE in Albuquerque. Viewing hours are Tuesday thru Saturday, 10am-4pm.

Last Week to see "Biologique"!

Royal Garden, mixed media, 18" x 14" framed, $595.
I was very pleased to have all three of my entries accepted into this exhibit at the New Mexico Art League, located at 3409 Juan Tabo NE (just behind the Albuquerque Public Library on the west side of the street).

I was out of town for the opening, so I went to see the show last week. The theme of "Biologique" is Nature and natural forms, and there was quite a variety of interpretations in the exhibit, done in every medium imaginable, all very high quality.

Shown above is one of my art works in "Biologique." This piece is from my "In a Japanese Garden" series, and is named Royal Garden for the purple color, which was a hue only worn by royalty or those of high rank in Japanese traditional culture.

The show ends this Saturday, February 25. The NM Art League is open Tuesday thru Saturday, 10am-4pm.

New Painting at the Weyrich Gallery

Zen Garden Blossoms, 2016. Original mixed media on panel. Image: 12x12" Available: contact Weyrich Gallery.
Today's blogpost features a new painting from my ongoing series "In a Japanese Garden." Painted in gouache on rice paper with gold metallic enhancements, the image also incorporates Chinese texts and characters.

In my research of Japanese art, history, and culture for this series, it was interesting to discover the impact and influence of Chinese culture on the development of Japanese civilization. Still today modern Japanese writing system contains several thousand Chinese characters known as kanji.

In this painting I have drawn on both cultures to create the image: The Chinese text is in the traditional vertical style of writing that the Japanese call tategaki, while the background of the blossoms uses the color blending seen in traditional Japanese woodblock prints.

The painting is available for purchase at the Weyrich Gallery located at 2935 Louisiana Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 / 505.883-7410.

Painting the Season

Bosque Cottonwoods, 2016. Original painting, oil on panel, 6" x 8"
Autumn is my favorite season, no matter where I live. Perhaps it's the cooler weather, the quality of the air, the color changes in the foliage...probably, it's all three.

So, two weeks ago when the Monday Plein Air Painters gathered at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House to paint, I grabbed my outdoor painting gear and joined them. What a lovely morning! And what a lovely location to paint.
Located in the South Valley of Albuquerque the Gutierrez-Hubbell homesite goes back to the 1850's, when it was the home of Julianna Gutierrez and James Hubbell. They had 8 children and their property also served as a farm, ranch, mercantile and trading post for the family business. Having been restored in recent years by Bernalillo County, the house and 10 acres is a historical and cultural site, one of six New Mexico sites named to the Register of Historic Places.

I wandered down to the acequia (the man-made water channel that the Spanish hand-dug for irrigation purposes) to paint the cottonwood trees that were just beginning to take on their yellow tinge of autumn.

It's been quite awhile since I've painted en plein air. But it was good to refresh my efforts and a wonderful place and day to do so.
FYI: The Gutierrez-Hubbell House is located at 6029 Isleta Blvd SW, Albuquerque. Open Tu - Sat, 10-2pm.

Last Day to Visit "In a Japanese Garden"

White Blossoms: Yellow, Blue, Peach, 2016.
6" x 6" each. Available separately.
Today is the last day of my exhibit "In a Japanese Garden"at the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque.

This has been a truly wonderful exhibit for me, from start to finish. I enjoyed creating the paintings; loved the installation by the Galler
y; was thrilled with the fabulous review by Wesley Pulkka; had fun giving my Artist Talk last weekend to the brave souls who came out in 100 degree heat; and am so grateful to those who purchased work, too!

Thank you! to everyone who has been a part of this process--those near and those far away.

Final Week of My Exhibit...Last views

Rising Moon, 2016, mixed media, 16 x 12"
SOLD
Oh, the moon was lovely last night over Albuquerque!

I am sure that Albert Pinkham Ryder, if he were still alive, would have noticed the moon last night too, since he did several paintings featuring night time illumination. Ryder is one of my favorite artists, and certainly an inspiration for my painting of the garden in the evening.

Last Week of My Exhibit

Kimono III (Gold), 2016, mixed media on panel, "12x12"
Since this is the last week of my exhibit "In a Japanese Garden" at the Weyrich Gallery in Albuquerque, I am posting the remaining paintings in the show.

One of the interesting facts I discovered while doing research for this exhibit was that the color purple was very difficult color to obtain in Japan during the Nara period, and therefore, very pricey. Only royalty, high ranking officials and priests were allowed to even wear the color purple.

Even though I had finished this painting, after learning that fact, I added purple dotting to this piece--adding a touch of "royalty" to it.

"My Journey to a Japanese Garden"

Mixed media on ricepaper, mounted on panel, 6x6." Available: contact Artist

Tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, June 18) I will be giving my Artist Talk at 3:30pm at the Weyrich Gallery. The title of my talk is "My Journey to a Japanese Garden." It's a free event and a great chance to see the show.

I've been giving a lot of thought to how to organize this presentation, since creating the work for an exhibit is an intuitive process and now it's time to provide a coherent narrative that gives viewers some sense of how the paintings came into being, my ideas, and the process and materials.

And of course, attendees are welcome to ask questions, too!

So if you are in Albuquerque, please come! The Gallery is located at 2935-D Louisiana NE (at Candelaria). The exhibit--In a Japanese Garden--continues thru June 25.

WOW! What a review!

Review Article by Wesley Pulkka, Albuquerque Journal, Sunday, June 12, 2016, LIFE section, p. 17
I woke up Sunday to a phone call from an artist-friend. "Get up and go buy a newspaper! You got a great review on your show!"

So I jumped out of bed and legged it over to my local Walgreen's and bought two Albuquerque Journal Sunday newspapers. Sure enough, my friend was right. It was a great review by Wesley Pulkka...no, actually, it was a FABULOUS review! Featuring color images of my paintings, too!

Mostly I appreciate Wes Pulkka's thoughtfulness and response to my artwork. It's so nice to have a reviewer really get your work. If you would like to read the review, here's the link .

Thanks to the many friends and artists who are Albuquerque Journal readers who emailed their generous and congratulatory comments about the review. I appreciate them all!

If you haven't yet seen the exhibit, it continues thru June 25 at the Weyrich Gallery 2935-D Louisiana in Albuquerque. Hours: Tu - Fri 10:30-5:30p / Sat 11-5:30.

I'll be doing an Artist Talk this Saturday, June 18, at 3:30pm at the Gallery...a free event and a great chance to see the exhibit, too.

"So, how was the show?"

View of 3 of my flower paintings: "In a Japanese Garden"
at the Weyrich Gallery. Photo credit: Jean Kondek
Last Friday was a beautiful evening for an opening reception, and a Citywide ArtsCrawl in Albuquerque to boot. So, for me it was a most "auspicious" night to have my exhibit, "In a Japanese Garden" at the Weyrich Gallery Albuquerque.

I am very grateful to my friends, colleagues, collectors, and clients of the Weyrich Gallery who came to the opening reception last week. Three paintings were purchased (Thank you, my dear friends and collectors!); and I received many encouraging emails, texts, and positive comments about the exhibit from those who attended, along with good wishes from friends, family, and supporters around the country.

One note from an artist-friend said, "I went to 6 other openings last night and yours was hands down way above and beyond what I saw elsewhere. Thanks for inviting me." Well, that was nice to hear.

Yes, I am pleased with the paintings, and the exhibit was beautifully installed by Valerie and Gary Tibbetts, the gallery owners.

"So, how was the show?"

Perfect!

PS: Thanks, Mom and Karen, for the lovely and exotic flower arrangement. It added just the right touch!

Open Studios Night!

The Harwood is pretty quiet. You never know who is working away in their upstairs studios.

This week, however, there are a lot of unusual sounds coming from behind closed doors—vacuuming, hammering, a stuff being moved around—all in preparation for this Saturday's annual Harwood Open Studios night.

So, here's your invitation, and I hope you can come by. And if you'd like a sneak preview of some of the artwork I'll have in my studio, check out my website.

See you there!

Getting the Painting "Right"

In the Brightness, 2016. Original oil on stretched canvas, 6"x6"
SOLD
Today's post of a yellow lily was begun over three months ago. So why are you just seeing it today? Well...

I painted the lily, and then the greenery—but I didn't like the way it turned out. So I repainted the lily, and then the greenery.

Then I tackled the background, first with a deep turquoise color; then a purplish hue; then a deep blue; and finally the rosy pink. (Yes, I am talking about those 17 little bits of color behind the flower and the leaves.)

Yes, it took three months to finally get it "right"—at least, I think it's "right."

Of course, I have been working on other paintings in the meantime—which I'll be sharing with you...just as soon as they are "right", too.

Thanks for taking a moment to read this post. Have a great week!

White Blossoms, Version 2

"White Blossoms, Blue Sky," 2016. Original mixed media on panel, 6"x6". Available: Contact Artist.

Back in September I posted a different "White Blossoms" painting, one with a bright yellow background.

Today's image is a different version of "White Blossoms" with a background of blue. It's painted with gouache on rice paper, overlaid with color pencil and accented with metallic gold. Rather cheerful, I think, considering the wintry weather some folks are experiencing today.

Thank you for taking a moment to visit my blog. Enjoy your weekend.

Last Blooms of Summer 1

Original Painting: Red Lily, 2015, gouache on panel, 6"x6"

Here in the Land of Enchantment, one can find evidence of three seasons happening simultaneously: There are still plenty of green leaves on the trees and a few lingering blossoms in the flower beds from summer. Meanwhile, the cottonwoods are taking on a range of autumn hues—from sunny yellow to deep gold. And then this morning, there was light powder on the Sandia Mountains, as winter nudges its way into our psyches here in New Mexico.

I have a few paintings of summer flowers that I finished back in September and hadn't yet posted. So here's a bright red lily for today's post.

Painted using acrylic gouache which dries very quickly—especially here in the Southwest—the painting has a looser, painterly feel to it. I didn't have time to fuss with the blending like I usually do. I rather like the more spontaneous, lively look.

Thanks for taking a moment to visit my blog. Enjoy your weekend.

Bird and Hand

Bird and Hand, oil on carved panel. Image: 14"x14." Framed.
SOLD

Today's post features the painting I have in the current Wild + Life show at Page Coleman Gallery in Albuquerque. The piece is called "Bird and Hand" and began as a panel that I hand carved and then painted with oils.

At last Friday night's opening, I received several comments about the painting and questions about its meaning. So here is what I was thinking while creating it: The hand represents Mankind; and the bird, Nature. Is the hand going to help the bird, or harm it? In turn, are we humans going to help Nature or destroy it? The ambivalence of the image is intentional.

There are many truly great art pieces in this show, and several were sold on opening night—a great way to support the Wildlife Rescue of New Mexico. You can still see the show on Saturdays, now through December 5. I think you will enjoy it.___________________________________

You're Invited....Tonight's Opening

I am very pleased to be included in this exhibition at the Page Coleman Gallery in Albuquerque. With artworks by 70 artists, the show will be diverse and interesting, as well as a benefit for the Wildlife Rescue of New Mexico.

Tonight's the opening from 5:30-8pm and I'll be there. The Gallery is located on Linn Avenue, one block north of Central Avenue, and a half a block east of San Pedro, very close to the NM Fairgrounds. There's plenty of free parking.

White Blossoms

SOLD White Blossoms, 2015. Gouache on ricepaper, mounted on panel. 6"x6"

Last year I was pleased to become a "Rainmaker" in the Small Works Auction, an annual fundraiser in support of the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, Missouri. An artist receives this designation when his/her artwork receives a bid of $300 or more during the auction.

The painting posted on my blog today is a small version (6x6 inches) of "White Blossoms", a 12x12 inch painting submitted to this year's Small Works Auction at Spiva. Both versions are painted in gouache on rice paper, mounted on panel. In both versions, the rice papers have bits of leaves embedded in the paper fibers which are part of the composition and surface texture.

Thanks for taking a moment to visit my art blog. I've been on the road for over a month, visiting my mother who just celebrated her 92nd birthday. (And she looks great for her age!)

Evening View

Evening View (Sandias, July), 2015. Oil on gessoed panel, 3"x9"
It's been quite awhile since I posted a plein air painting. My favorite time of day to paint outdoors during the summer months is after 6pm, when the heat of the day and the blinding scorch of the sun are over.

Living near Balloon Fiesta Park, I have a great view and convenient place to paint the Sandia Mountains at that time of day ... like a ringside seat in Paradise.

Thanks for taking a moment to read my blog. I hope you enjoyed it.
